Lesson 01: How Dogs Learn

Pop some popcorn! I’ve got two videos for you here and they’re pretty juicy.

This is one of the most important parts of the entire Cranky Canine program and it’s tricky stuff, but I know you’re going to get it by the end of this lesson.

I’ll also bet that you’ll need to revisit this page a few times as you’re going to get stuck now and again, but that’s to be expected.

Welcome to Psych 101 – buckle up!

First, let’s discuss how dogs learn through associations. This is key for when our dogs are “upset” or feeling emotional. Sounds familiar? This type of learning has nothing to do with Positive Reinforcement. You’ll see why after the second video. 😉

Next, we’ll talk about how dogs learn through cause and effect. This is where the term “positive reinforcement” comes into play. This is key for when we are training our dogs to respond to a cue by performing a behaviour. This is not as helpful when our dog is “upset”, but comes into play later on.
