Using Food in Training

All the best animal trainers in the world use food in training because you can get “more bang for your buck” considering how many repetitions you can get with a bag of food. (The only exception is animals like snakes who eat one meal every few days or weeks! That’s a LOT harder to manage…!)

We can use food to lure a dog into position, shape a behaviour by rewarding approximations of the final behaviour, capture a behaviour by rewarding immediately when it occurs. This is called “Operant Conditioning” or cause and effect. (B.F. Skinner)

Not only that, but we can create fabulous associations by pairing something novel with food, AND we can use food to change an emotional response to something or someone from negative to positive. (Pavlov)

Food is powerful!
