Assessing Stress Levels

How do you know how your dog is handling each level of the training plans? Here is your legend:

Zero signs of stress: This means that your puppy is eating, sleeping, playing, or relaxed. You can keep going!

Signs of mild stress? This means that your puppy suddenly stopped eating or playing, and is watching you intently. Perhaps s/he is standing and quietly whining just a little, or occasionally pawing at the door/gate. Seems a little concerned. Slow down or repeat the level and reassess.

Signs of severe stress? This means that your puppy suddenly stopped eating or playing, and is watching you intently. Seems upset. Perhaps s/he is standing and barking/howling, continuously pawing at the door/gate, biting on the bars of the crate, pacing/circling. Immediately stop when you observe any of these signs. This level is too hard – go back one level and reassess.
