Calming music

I often recommend that puppies are left with some sort of sounds to soothe. Many folks opt for the television but that can be overwhelming, depending on the content. Dogs need quiet time and relaxation rather than over-stimulation. Here are my top choices:

  • Rotate daily, on a low-volume: classical music, reggae, and soft rock. These three are proven to help dogs relax. Who knew?!
  • White noise machine near the front door in a condo to block out hallway sounds and prevent alert-barking in an adolescent dog.
  • iCalm Pet is a great product that we use in classes occasionally!
  • DogTV is a neat new choice if you do want to use your television!

Be mindful that the volume is never too high, because even white noise can cause listening fatigue. A good rule of thumb is to play music or white noise at a level that blocks noises outside or in the hall, but not so loud or too close that they’re irritated or that the neighbours can hear.
