Feeding in position is one of the most important keys to effective training. If we mark for a dog sitting on cue, and we feed them when they stand up or lie down, they will become confused about what has earned the food reward. Feeding them in the position we have marked them for, will strengthen the behaviour/position!
If you have cued a “sit”, it’s important to mark the moment their bum hits the floor and then deliver the food while their bum is still on the floor. Many dogs (especially puppies) will pop up after the mark and that’s okay – we will simply lure them back into the sitting position and release the food (do not mark again!) when their bum hits the floor. This is simply a reminder to the dog that they can stay put while the food reward makes its way to their mouth.
