How to patch it up when things go wrong

EEK! You went too far and got the quick!

If that happens, you need an automatic behaviour for YOU so that things don’t snowball and go downhill, fast.

  1. You cut the quick. Yes, it hurts. Yes, it bleeds. Yes, the dog screams. Yes, you want to as well.
  2. Your instant response is going to be “YAAAAAY!! THIS IS SO MUCH FUN! LOOK AT ALL THE FOOD!!” and then a serious food party starts. I’m talking 10-20 treats being scattered in front of your dog so that they can sniff around and scavenge. As they’re scarfing up treats, you’re getting the cornstarch.
  3. Scatter MORE treats to keep their face busy and take the paw, gently dip the affected nail in the cornstarch, and again…scatter treats.
  4. The food has to be able to patch up what just happened. Be generous.

Basic first aid:

  1. Cornstarch should pack it and stop the bleeding painlessly.
  2. Walking around on that nail will rub the cornstarch off and allow it to bleed again. If you can have something like a stuffed Kong in the freezer for these moments so you can keep your dog still and in one place until the bleeding stops.
  3. If the bleeding continues after 30-60 minutes, you’ll want to flush it with saline (see below for how to make a saline solution in a pinch) and wrap it in clean gauze and put a bootie or sock on it for a few hours. Don’t wrap too tight or it can cut off circulation!
  4. If the bleeding is excessive even after all of this and 4 hours later… you may want to seek veterinary care. Bring the best treats imaginable. Sandwich meats, cheese, tripe, steak, you name it. This may be a significant setback and you’ll need to patch it up.

How to make a saline solution:

  1. Put one cup of water and ½ teaspoon of salt into the pot. Put the lid on.
  2. Boil for 15 minutes with the lid on (set a timer).
  3. Set the pot aside until cooled to a room temperature.
  4. Carefully pour the saline solution from the pot into a clean jar and put the lid on.
  5. Store it at room temperature for 3 days and then discard.
