How to Prepare

It all starts with having the right tools. There is a ton of equipment on the market, but who’s to know what is best for each individual dog?

Let’s unpack the different types of equipment out there and then break down how to condition the most popular pieces.

Here is what you need:

  • Very high-value food chopped into pea-sized pieces
  • A treat pouch or bait bag
  • A polite walking cue – a word or short phrase
  • A collar, harness, head halter (whatever works best for your dog) – not sure? Check out the Quick Win on Tools & Equipment.
  • A non-retractable leash (preferably 8′ in length)

“I think the most important thing to note and to be said, is that no piece of equipment is going to teach your dog to keep the leash loose or teach your dog to pull on a leash when we’re out for a walk. The equipment doesn’t do that. Only consequence can do that.”
