Welcome

Welcome!

I want you to feel like this is your new Google. A detailed and science-based repository of information that will support you as you get to know your new rescue dog.

Having a rescue dog is a very different experience compared to raising a puppy. Your new dog has a history that you might have zero insight into, so a LOT of patience and compassion is required. Rescue dogs often come from a difficult past that might include:

  • abuse
  • neglect
  • poor living conditions
  • long and stressful transport trips
  • instability
  • frequent re-homing
  • harsh training methods & punishment
  • lack of socialisation
  • lack of exposure to the real world
  • few positive experiences

We often hear that rescue dogs or larger breeds “need a firmer hand” or “strong leadership” but these are bogus myths that cause new adopters to use harsher methods and less compassion when working with a new rescue dog. My goal is to help you approach this experience with fresh eyes and thrive through the rescue experience.

Every time a rescue dog is placed in another home or environment, their behaviour becomes less and less stable as their stress levels increase with the lack of predictability and stability in their life. If you’re their 3rd, 4th, 5th home, you are almost guaranteed to see behaviour issues. I will prepare you for this!

When you adopt a rescue dog, you have an idea in your head and all too often, it doesn’t match your reality or you feel really overwhelmed. Let’s get you and your new dog off on the right paw!

Let me guide you – that’s why you’ve hired me!

Wherever you are in your journey, I’ll make the same suggestions:

Work through the material step-by-step. Consume each lesson in order; no need to take action just yet. Get the information uploaded to your brain and then when you go back with a mission to take action (rather than consume) it will be so much easier for you as the material will be familiar!

All the hard work you do early on will pay off tenfold in the long run. You’ve got this.

My job, here at The Centre for Canine Education Inc. is to give you the tools and knowledge to make this journey as enjoyable and successful as possible. I’ve been here before – right where you are standing, and I know what you’re going through. I also know what you’re about to go through, so you’ll be better prepared for what’s to come.

The methods, techniques, tools and equipment that I suggest are all force-free and humane. I want to teach you how best to communicate with your pup without using fear, pain, intimidation, or punishment. We call this “positive” training, but do not be fooled – I don’t mean “permissive”. We use a rewards system that encompasses praise, food, toys, affection, and access to resources. This method is science-based and has been proven as the most reliable method in training all species, for decades.

Throughout this process, I’m here to support you and guide you – please let me know how I can help. There’s nothing that makes me happier than to see happy, healthy dogs and their relaxed, confident humans.
