Preparation

Here is how to prepare for your Scent Skills class. I recommend preparing at least a few days in advance so that you’re not scrambling on the day you start. The odour needs 24 hours to “take”, so best to be prepared!

You will need:

  • a storage box with a lid to store all these items:
  • an essential oil
  • disposable nitrile gloves
  • 3 small mason jars with lids – must be clean and have no odour
  • a drill
  • 10 cotton swabs with paper sticks, not plastic
  • 1 cotton ball
  • tweezers
  • a box that is large enough to store a small mason jar (an empty tissue box is perfect!)

Here is how to prepare the supplies: (the steps are numbered for a reason – follow each step in order!)

  1. Drill 5-8 small holes in the lids of two mason jars (leaving one as is).
  2. Cut the cotton swabs in half and place all but one half of a swab in one mason jar.
  3. Place the remaining one half of a swab in the other mason jar and secure a lid with holes. Mark this jar with a “C”. This is your “COLD jar”. There is no scent in this jar or on the swab.
  4. Put on your nitrile gloves.
  5. Open the essential oil carefully and drip 3 drops onto the cotton ball.
  6. Place the cotton ball in the mason jar with the cotton swabs.
  7. Cap the essential oil and put it away.
  8. Remove the nitrile gloves without contaminating your skin or clothing, turning them inside out, and throwing them in the garbage. Tie the garbage over so that any scent from the essential oil is contained.
  9. Place the untouched lid on the mason jar with the cotton swabs and cotton ball, secure it, shake it a few times and put it in the storage box. This is your “SCENT jar”.
  10. Wait 24 hours.
  11. Put on a fresh pair of nitrile gloves.
  12. Using your tweezers, take one cotton swab half from the “scent jar”, place it into a fresh mason jar and secure a lid with holes.
  13. Remove the nitrile gloves without contaminating your skin or clothing, turning them inside out, and throwing them in the garbage. Tie the garbage over so that any scent from the essential oil is contained.
  14. Mark this jar with an “H”. This is your “HOT jar”.
  15. Your scent kit is complete. Keep it stored away from your dog and any other items so that the scent does not accidentally get transferred to other items.

The cotton swab half in the hot jar is good for likely 2-3 weeks. After that, you may toss it in the garbage and tie it over to contain any remaining scent. You may choose to place it back in the “scent jar” to get refreshed for reuse, but remember to refresh the cotton ball with 3 drops of the same essential oil once you hit a halfway point with reused cotton swabs or 3 months have passed – whichever comes first.

Always use gloves and tweezers to transfer scented items to prevent the scent from transferring onto your skin or clothing or any other items in the environment.
