Now let’s name the behaviour. When your dog is looking away from you, say your eye contact cue. If they turn their head to make eye contact within 30 seconds, you will click and feed. Be patient. Don’t repeat your cue – just stand still and wait. If you are unsuccessful, or have to wait longer than 30 seconds, your dog may be too distracted in this environment. Go back to step two and spend some time practising that step.
It will take many repetitions at step three before your dog recognizes the word associated with giving you eye contact. Be sure to practice in a quiet and distraction-free environment before taking it on the road.
