Step 5: Adding movement

Lastly, let’s add some movement. While moving forward with your dog, look for one of the following three behaviours to mark and feed in position:

  1. Eye contact (cued or captured)
  2. NOT pulling (ANY loose leash walking can be rewarded)
  3. walking within your personal space bubble (as far as you can spread out your arms around you)

If you encounter any of these behaviours, click (or say “YES!”) and then feed in position. You can prompt your dog for eye contact or you can use kissy noises to keep them engaged with you. This is especially useful in the early stages of polite walking. Ideally, your dog will learn over time that doing these things on their own is what gets most rewarded.
