Step 1: Wait for tension and feed

To do Silky Leash with your dog, begin in a low-distraction environment. Arm yourself with treats and a non-retractable leash. Attach the leash to your dog’s harness or flat–collar and hide a handful of treats behind your back. Now, gently but noticeably put tension on the leash. The tension must be consistent. That means, no “popping” or pulling hard enough to drag your dog over. Ensure you are pulling sideways towards you and not upwards. Your dog should never find this exercise aversive. Once there is tension on leash, count 1-Missippippi. Then feed a treat or two and immediately loosen the tension on the leash. Repeat this step 5 times.
